Best autumnal trends for 2019

There’s no denying it now, those warm summer nights are slowly coming to an end as the invigorating autumn breeze has started to settle in. It can be hard to decipher how to best transition into a new season closet but moving into autumn doesn’t have to mean drab sartorial choices.

We reject the notion of practicality over style, so we’ve rounded up the 2019 autumn trends you need to know about, to update your new-season wardrobe and style.

Save the minimalism for the throes of winter where heavier separates take centre stage. Autumn still lends itself to experimental dressing where not only are the looks/pieces interchangeable with your summer closet, but you also have some room to have fun with vibrant colours and prints. Layering is key!

Plaids and checks

Plaids and checks are quintessential autumnal trends that continually ebb and flow through fashion.

The reason it weaves in and out of style so often is that people tend to shy away from bold patterns.

Thanks to fashion houses like Dior, who featured plenty of checks and plaids on their autumn 2019/2020 runway in Paris, they are back.

And this time we think they have some staying power with celebrities like Anne Hathaway and fashion influencers showing us how to translate the trend in a “wearable” way.

Stylist tip: Mix and match your plaids or opt for a bright coloured plaid and/or check for an updated take on the trend.Loose suiting

Sharply tailored suiting is evolving into a more contemporary style in the form of softer silhouettes and a wider variety of hues.

Giorgio Armani’s runway gave us a bright royal blue that we added to our Pinterest boards immediately.

Not just reserved for board meetings and interviews, women are sporting sleek and stylish suits to social occasions such as the races, baby showers, engagements and weddings!

When functionality and fun meet: Of course, there are still plenty of streamlined options if you are looking for a suit for a more formal event.

An ode to the ‘70s

Starting on the runways and cascading into our favourite chainstores and e-tailers, seventies influences are making a comeback - and we’re thrilled about it.

The 2019 Zendaya x Tommy Hilfiger collection perfectly captured the fashion zeitgeist of the ‘70s with gold lurex dresses and wide-leg jeans while the retro details presented at Zimmermann, has us adding leather pants, skirts and berets to our new Autumn wardrobe!

Corduroy

Yes, that warm, textured material you wore in overall-form when you were 3 and that your grandpa wears to Sunday lunch every week is back in style.

Chain store brands like Glassons and Uniqlo already have some great offerings.

To avoid looking too winter-heavy, pair one corduroy piece with something lighter from your summer closet like a white tee and a denim jacket for perfect transeasonal dressing.

Sneakers over boots

Put your best foot forward and rework your crisp white sneakers into your autumn closet (you still have time to fully commit to a pair of winter boots).

While there will still be lots of dry days in autumn, kicks aren’t the ideal choice for those rainy days so a pair of lightweight ankle boots are still good to have on hand to ensure your sneakers stay “so fresh and so clean”
